‘Orthodontics’ comes from two Greek words; ‘orthos’, meaning right or correct, and ‘dons’ meaning tooth. To have Orthodontic treatment is to have ‘corrected or straight teeth’. The focus of orthodontic treatment is to corrrect bite disorders, skeletal and dental relationships, growth imbalances, and facial aesthetics and form.
Most patients consult an orthodontist because they are dissatisfied with the appearance of their teeth. Research has shown that an attractive smile enhances self-confidence thereby influencing personal and professional success.
In addition, correctly aligned teeth are easier to clean and maintain thus reducing the chance of gum disease, food impaction and decay caused by tartar build-up. A well-aligned bite causes less wear on the teeth and less strain on the jaw muscle and joints.
Quality orthodontic treatment and regularly scheduled dental care can lead to a lifetime of healthy, attractive teeth.

An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed two or more years of postgraduate orthodontic training at an accredited dental school and limits his/her practice to orthodontics.
Teeth and sometimes facial profiles are permanently changed by orthodontic treatment; therefore, it is important the treatment be done properly. Orthodontists are best able to establish appropriate treatment plans and provide proper treatment because they have graduated from an accredited orthodontics program, limit their practice to orthodontics, and are required to obtain continuing education credits in orthodontics.
